Portrait Of Sir Edward East (1584–1657), Later 1st Baronet Of Radnage, In A Black Doublet And Lace Ruff, With The Arms Of The East Family; English School, C.1605–1615, Oil On Panel Painting
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Titan Fine Art
This portrait presents a poised young gentleman at the moment when England’s emerging professional elite used portraiture to assert status, lineage, and intellectual authority. Painted in oil on panel with the clarity and restraint characteristic of early Jacobean portraiture, it combines a direct, psychologically alert likeness with meticulous costume detail and prominently displayed heraldry. The arms—a chevron between three horse heads erased—belong to the East family of Radnage, Buckinghamshire, allowing a strong identification of the sitter as Sir Edward East (1584–1657), later Lord Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas.
The sitter appears bust-length against a dark ground, his body subtly turned while his gaze meets the viewer with composed assurance. His large cartwheel ruff, supported by a concealed supportasse, and his black, closely buttoned doublet anchor the portrait firmly between c.1605-1615, when such ruffs were at their fullest and black attire signalled dignity... and wealth. His narrow moustache and pointed “spade” beard reinforce this dating. The inclusion of heraldry—never casual in portraits of this period—confirms both identity and social standing, situating him within a prosperous Buckinghamshire lineage.
Edward East’s career reflects the opportunities available to talented lawyers in early Stuart England. Educated at the Inns of Court, he rose steadily through the legal profession, eventually becoming Lord Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas and receiving a baronetcy in 1642. Although primarily a practising jurist, he compiled extensive notes of cases heard in the Court of King’s Bench; published posthumously as ''Reports of Cases in the Court of King’s Bench'', they became a foundational legal authority well into the eighteenth century. This portrait therefore captures him not merely as a young lawyer but as a figure whose later scholarship would shape English common law.
His marriage to Anne Skinner, daughter of Sir Vincent Skinner—an important figure in royal financial administration—further embedded him within the networks of governance and gentry society. The couple established their seat at Radnage, where such a portrait would have served as a visual assertion of lineage, learning, and social legitimacy.
Stylistically, the painting belongs to the London workshop tradition of the early Jacobean period, shaped by Netherlandish techniques and favouring restrained compositions, dark grounds, and precise modelling. It predates the transformative influence of Van Dyck and reflects the sober elegance preferred by English patrons in the first decades of the seventeenth century.
Viewed today, the portrait offers a vivid link to a man whose rise from provincial gentry to the highest ranks of the judiciary exemplifies the ambitions of early Stuart England, preserving both his likeness and the cultural world that shaped him.
