Old Farmhouse by the Sea, Provence: Pampelonne Near St. Tropez Large French Cote D'azur mediterranean Landscape Oil on Canvas

1940 - 1960
Description

This sun-drenched Mediterranean landscape captures a tranquil Provençal farmhouse—locally known as a "mas"—situated on the iconic coast of Pampelonne and Ramatuelle. Painted by the noted French landscape artist André Beronneau (1886-1973), the work is a virtuoso example of mid-century French Impressionism. Beronneau, a regular exhibitor at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris, was celebrated for his ability to capture the specific, crystalline light of the South.

Pampelonne is perhaps the most storied stretch of the French Riviera. It was here that Brigitte Bardot famously captivated the world in And God Created Woman, and where the timeless glamour of the Côte d'Azur was truly born. This painting offers a rare, peaceful glimpse of the landscape as it stood in the 1950s—an era of quiet elegance before the region became a global playground.

Dating from the 1950s, our oil on canvas is executed with a confident, thick impasto technique. Using a palette knife rather than a brush, Beronneau has built up the surface of the painting to create a wonderful tactile quality. The vibrant "azure" sky and sun-baked earth are rendered with a sculptural depth that shifts beautifully in changing natural light.

The work of art is signed at the lower right and titled "Vieux Mas près de Pampelonne" to the verso on the stretcher, where it also bears several (exhibition?) numbers.

Measuring 50 x 73 cm, the overall framed size of the painting in its French hand carved original frame is 68 x 91 cm.
