Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Cold-painted Vienna bronzes are finely cast bronze sculptures produced in Austria, primarily from the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries. Unlike traditional bronzes finished with high-temperature patinas, these figures were painted with cold-enamel paint layers after casting, resulting in vivid colours and detailed surfaces.

These sculptures were cast using the lost-wax process, allowing for precise surface textures such as feathers or fur. Once cleaned and chased, skilled artisans applied multiple layers of oil-based paints or enamel pigments without refiring the metal, preserving fine detail and natural coloration.

Authentic Franz Bergman bronzes frequently feature specific foundry marks, such as a capital B within a vase shape, alongside a shape number or signature. Collectors also evaluate the precision of the casting, the weight of the bronze, and the characteristically aged wear on the cold-painted surface.

These small decorative figures function well as accent pieces on bespoke shelving, mantelpieces, or executive office desks. Their naturalistic detail and historical craftsmanship provide a touch of character when layered alongside books, framed botanical prints, or minimalist stone surfaces.

Cold-painted finishes are vulnerable to harsh solvents, water, and abrasive cloths. Maintenance should be limited to gentle dusting with a soft feather duster or dry artist paintbrush, keeping the object in a climate-controlled setting away from direct sunlight to prevent paint loss.
