Arthur Reginald Smith was born in Skipton-in-Craven, Yorkshire, and grew up in Threshfield. He studied art at Keighley School of Art and spent his holidays sketching. He then attended the Royal College of Art (1901-4), and was awarded a travel scholarship which enabled him to travel to Italy in 1906. He exhibited at such leading London venues as the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, and other public and private galleries.
''The Boat Yard'' is a lovely example. A watercolour measuring 4''x 12'' it is signed lower right and is mounted giving an overall size of 9''x 17''. It is unframed.
