FAQs

Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, characterised by robust proportions, dark woods such as mahogany and walnut, and a revival of historical motifs drawing from Gothic, Elizabethan, and Rococo influences.

Cabinet makers of this era predominantly utilised solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied over secondary woods like pine or oak, often incorporating hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction and turned wooden knobs.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining hand-cut dovetailing, irregular wood shrinkage, historical tool marks, secondary woods on drawer linings and backboards, and the presence of ageing patination on the surface.

Pairing a period wooden chest with contemporary minimalist decor, abstract art, or sleek lighting creates a balanced juxtaposition that highlights the rich grain and craftsmanship of the antique piece.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and applying occasional applications of high-quality beeswax to nourish the finish.
