Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 18th century, portraiture was used by nobility and royalty to display status, wealth, and lineage. Artists employed formal poses, rich drapery, and subdued backgrounds to highlight the subjects social standing.

These works were created using hand-ground oil pigments applied to linen or cotton canvas stretched across timber frames. The surrounding frames were constructed from carved wood, treated with gesso, and covered in gold leaf.

Authentic period paintings display uniform craquelure across the paint surface, natural canvas oxidisation on the reverse, and signs of hand-carved construction on the frame. Professional inspection under ultraviolet light can also identify historical restorations.

Positioning a historical portrait above a modern console table or mantelpiece creates a focal point that bridges contemporary and classical design. Directional lighting, such as a dedicated picture light, enhances the colour tones and carved gilding.

Maintain the portrait in a stable, climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent paint flaking. Dust gently using a dry, soft camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths.
