Prometheus Antiques has dated this piece to the 1890s.
The work is an excellent example of Italian realism by a highly regarded artist, and is signed and inscribed 'P. Ruggiero. Napoli' to the lower right. Pasquale Ruggiero was born in Salerno and died in Naples where he spent the majority of his working life, he exhibited in Naples and elsewhere in Italy, including Milan. His work is always realistic but carries a strong feel of the romance of Italy and the Italian people. This is a fine and interesting example of his style and is in good condition with some minor marks and touching in. The painting is framed in a period gilt frame but it would not be the original, however it works very well with the piece. C.1890.
