FAQs

Nineteenth-century coastal paintings frequently capture dramatic maritime scenes, turbulent weather, and shipping vessels, reflecting a romanticised fascination with the power of nature and the sea.

These works are traditionally executed with oil pigments on stretched linen canvas, housed within heavy timber frames featuring hand-carved gesso, plaster ornamentation, and a gold leaf or gilt finish.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the canvas weave, natural craquelure in the oil paint, stretcher frame construction, historical ageing signs, and the patina of the accompanying period gilt frame.

Such a piece serves as a striking focal point on a dark-painted feature wall, or adds historical contrast and sophisticated texture when integrated into a minimalist gallery display.

Paintings should be displayed away from direct sunlight and high humidity, avoiding chemical cleaners on the canvas while periodically dusting the gilt frame with a soft, dry brush.
