Description

17th/18thC Polish School Oil on Canvas Double Portrait Painting Religious Icon

Brief Description:

This is a fabulous and rare late 17th/early 18th-century Polish School Oil on Canvas Double Portrait Painting depicting the elegant Black Madonna of Czestochowa with the infant Christ Child.

Circa 1670-1710

As one can see from these images, the sitters have adorable facial expressions with excellent attention to detail to their period, religious clothing.

The work is currently mounted (unframed).

It displays well without a frame; however, I believe the piece is deserving of an impressive/quality period frame to show it off to its full potential.

Indeed, it is a fascinating oil that has the all-important Old Master charm.

FAQs

Traditional icons are characterised by stylized depictions of sacred figures, symbolic use of colour, and gold leaf haloes, often following strict canonical guidelines established through centuries of ecclesiastical art.

Historical works typically utilise hand-woven linen or canvas stretched over wooden frames, prepared with animal glue and gesso grounds, and painted using traditional oil pigments bound in linseed or walnut oil.

Authenticity is assessed through microscopic examination of craquelure patterns, pigment analysis, canvas weave testing, stretcher frame construction, and historical provenance documentation.

An antique icon can serve as a focal point when mounted on a neutral wall, paired with minimalist lighting to highlight the textured surface and deep tones of the historic canvas.

Preservation requires maintaining stable relative humidity between forty and fifty percent, avoiding direct sunlight exposure, and employing professional conservators for periodic cleaning and canvas tension adjustments.
