Nineteenth-century portraiture often evolved from strict academic realism toward more expressive brushwork and atmospheric lighting, capturing the psychological depth of the sitter.

These works were typically created using oil paints applied to stretched canvas or wooden panels, housed within heavily carved and gilded plaster-on-wood frames.

Authentication involves examining the canvas weave, inspecting the composition of the oil pigments under magnification, checking for oxidisation, and evaluating the age of the stretcher bars and frame.

A traditional painted portrait adds gravity and narrative depth to modern spaces, working particularly well when juxtaposed against minimalist architecture or neutral walls.

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight, maintain stable humidity and temperature levels to prevent cracking of the oil paint, and consult a professional restorer for cleaning.
