FAQs

Nineteenth-century Scottish landscape painting is characterised by its romanticised depiction of dramatic highlands, moody skies, and pastoral moorlands, often reflecting the influence of the romantic movement on British art.

These works were typically created using oil paints applied to stretched canvas, frequently housed within ornate, gilt plaster or carved wooden frames.

Authenticity is assessed by examining canvas ageing, stretcher frame construction, pigment composition, artist signatures, and the presence of craquelure consistent with nineteenth-century materials.

Such pieces serve as focal points in traditional or transitional schemes, contrasting effectively against neutral wall colours or complementing rich, heritage-inspired palettes.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and keeping the canvas free from dust using a soft, dry brush.
