FAQs

Victorian furniture, produced during the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, encompasses a variety of revival styles influenced by the Industrial Revolution, transitioning from heavy, ornate mahogany and walnut pieces to lighter designs towards the end of the century.

Victorian chests of drawers were typically constructed from solid hardwoods like mahogany, walnut, or pine, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, turned wooden knob handles, and often cedar or pine secondary woods for drawer linings.

Authentic pieces can be identified by inspecting the drawer joints for hand-cut dovetails, looking for uniform shrinkage and oxidisation in the wood, checking for secondary woods like deal or pine, and observing natural wear patterns around the keyholes and drawer pulls.

A Victorian chest of drawers serves as a striking anchor piece in a modern room when paired with minimalist wall colours, contemporary abstract art, and sleek lighting, creating a balanced contrast between old and new design elements.

Preserve antique mahogany by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent warping or fading, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying a natural beeswax to nourish the wood finish.
