William Henry Hunt (1790–1864) was one of the most admired English watercolourists of the 19th century, known for his meticulous still-lifes, rustic scenes and finely observed studies of everyday life. A student of John Varley and influenced by the emerging naturalism of the period, Hunt became a member of the Old Watercolour Society in 1827 and was celebrated for his clarity of touch, delicate draftsmanship and ability to capture atmosphere with minimal means.
Although best known for his watercolour works, small pencil studies attributed to Hunt or his circle remain valued for their intimacy and charm, often capturing fleeting maritime or rural subjects with quiet precision.
