Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A semainier is a tall, narrow chest of drawers originally designed with seven drawers, intended to hold a distinct set of clothes or linens for each day of the week. The term originates from the French word semaine, meaning week, and became prominent in 18th and 19th-century French cabinetmaking.

Traditional semainiers were constructed using hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, frequently finished with flame or feather mahogany veneers applied over pine or oak carcases. High-quality pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, brass keyhole escutcheons, and turned wooden or cast metal handles.

Authentic 19th-century pieces typically exhibit hand-sawn dovetail drawer joints, uneven rear timber boards with hand-planed marks, original lock mechanisms, and natural timber shrinkage over time. The presence of book-matched flame mahogany veneers and natural patina around the handles or keyholes also indicates period origin.

A tall, narrow chest of drawers functions well in compact spaces, such as alcoves, entryways, or tight bedroom corners where floor space is limited. Pair it with neutral wall tones, a modern table lamp, or framed artwork hung above to balance the vertical proportions of the piece.

Dust the timber regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the wood grain. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the mahogany veneer from cracking, lifting, or fading.
