Nineteenth-century French bronze sculpture flourished during the industrial and artistic expansion of the Second Empire and Third Republic, driven by master founders and celebrated animalier and figurative sculptors who utilised the lost-wax casting method.

Authentic period figures are cast from copper and tin alloy, known as bronze, and typically finished with a chemical patination to simulate age, mounted on slate, marble, or gilt-brass bases.

Authenticity is determined by examining the crispness of the chasing, the presence of foundry marks or artist signatures, the depth and oxidation of the patina, and the weight and construction of the cast.

This type of piece serves as a focal point on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table, pairing well with traditional or transitional decor styles to add textural contrast and historical depth.

Bronze should be dusted gently with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally treated with microcrystalline wax to protect the patination from moisture and atmospheric degradation; abrasive cleaners must be avoided.
