Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 17TH CENTURY:
Dense extinct woodworm flight holes: long-standing age and natural degradation of the timber.
Gilding rubbed through to the bare timber on high folds: centuries of handling.
Expressive Baroque movement in the drapery: typical of Continental religious sculpture.
Flat unfinished reverse: sculpted specifically to stand within an altar niche.

This seventeenth-century sculpture depicts Saint Francis in Baroque style, carved from walnut with a gilded finish in gold leaf over gesso, showing wear with dark speckles across the surface. The figure wears monastic robes with a hooded habit, featuring an outstretched hand and exposed feet, standing atop a later dark moulded plinth base with square tiers. The piece measures 52.5 cm high, 27 cm wide, and 18 cm deep, providing a compact ornamental display. Suitable for placement on a mantelpiece in a living room, study, or hallway, this sculpture integrates easily into traditional home interiors. The carved wooden figure brings historical character to a shelf or cabinet display, pairing well with period furniture and ecclesiastical decorative arts.

FAQs

Carved giltwood figures of saints were traditionally commissioned for ecclesiastical settings and private chapels across Europe, particularly during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. These statues served as devotional aids, portraying revered religious figures such as Saint Francis in draped monastic robes.

Sculptors carved the figures from hardwoods or pine, applying a ground layer of gesso over the prepared wood surface. Gold leaf was then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques, often combined with polychrome paint details for skin tones and drapery.

Authentic period carvings display natural wood shrinkage, historical wear to the gilding revealing the bole or gesso beneath, and visible hand-carving marks. The reverse side often features flatter carving or hollowed sections designed to reduce weight and prevent warping.

A carved giltwood statue provides strong textural contrast when displayed on a simple console table, fireplace mantelpiece, or within a minimalist alcove. Pair it with subdued lighting and neutral backdrops to emphasise the patinated gold surface.

Keep giltwood objects in stable humidity levels to prevent the timber from expanding and cracking the gesso layer. Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, liquid solvents, or commercial polishes which can dissolve delicate gilding.
