Description

From a lifelong collection of Mason's Ironstone. A Coffee cup, circa 1890, made in the shape of early 19th-century custard cups. Quite difficult to find with saucers, as people collected them as custard cups without the saucers.

Made in the late 1890s, they were designed as a coffee cup, but had flaws with heat and the handle, so not huge amounts were made. This has led to them being very hard to find, and people collecting.

This is in  a  Bandana  pattern pattern with chinoiserie pattern

Masons Patent Ironstone China was patented in 1813 by Charles Mason as a durable, heavy-bodied ceramic alternative to porcelain, designed to withstand everyday use while mimicking oriental imports.

Ironstone is a type of heavy earthenware composed of china clay, Cornish stone, feldspar, and flint, often decorated using hand-applied transfer printing combined with enamel colours and gilding.

Authentic pieces typically feature impressed, printed, or crown-and-banner maker marks on the underside, alongside characteristic crazing, weight, and dense paste consistency typical of 19th-century kilns.

These pieces can be displayed on open shelving, within glass-fronted cabinets, or used as accent decorative objects on sideboards to introduce historical pattern and colour into a room.

Antique ironstone should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent; avoid dishwashers, harsh scrubbing, and soaking to protect the glaze from staining and crazing degradation.
