A banjo barometer is a domestic meteorological instrument featuring a characteristic elongated shape resembling a banjo, popular during the 19th century for measuring atmospheric pressure.

These instruments typically featured carved timber cases such as oak or mahogany, inset porcelain or paper dial faces, brass bezels, and glass covers protecting the delicate internal mechanics.

Authenticity is indicated by period-appropriate hand-carved woodwork, traditional typography on the dial, aged mercury or aneroid mechanisms, and minor signs of natural oxidation on brass components.

Mounting the piece on a plain painted wall allows the rich grain and intricate carvings of the timber case to serve as a focal point, complementing traditional or transitional decor schemes.

Keep the instrument away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations to protect the wood and dial face, dusting the exterior gently with a dry, soft cloth.
