FAQs

Nineteenth-century British watercolour painting is characterised by a focus on atmospheric landscapes, natural light, and loose brushwork, often depicting rural scenes and topographical subjects.

These works typically utilise hand-ground pigments applied to heavy rag paper made from cotton or linen fibres, often supported by card or mounted within traditional framing.

Authenticity is assessed through paper watermarks, the chemical composition of historical pigments, artist signatures, and characteristic ageing such as foxing and oxidisation.

An antique painting adds historical depth when paired with clean lines and neutral walls, allowing the artwork to serve as a sophisticated focal point.

Preservation requires framing with UV-protective glass, maintaining stable humidity levels, and avoiding direct exposure to strong sunlight to prevent fading and paper degradation.
