Dutch Delftware is tin-glazed earthenware produced in and around the city of Delft in the Netherlands. Developed primarily during the seventeenth century, potters formulated this material to emulate the highly prized blue and white Chinese porcelain imported by the Dutch East India Company.

Delftware was created using a refined local clay body fired at lower temperatures than true porcelain. The vessel was dipped in an opaque white tin glaze and decorated with metal oxides, such as cobalt blue, before undergoing a secondary firing.

Authentic seventeenth and eighteenth-century pieces typically exhibit tiny rim glaze chips, known as fritting, exposing the reddish or buff earthenware beneath. Hand-painted brushwork displays slight variations, and the tin glaze often shows a soft, micro-bubbled sheen rather than a modern uniform gloss.

A blue and white Delft jug functions well as a standalone decorative object on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or open bookshelf. The high-contrast cobalt pattern complements classic timber surfaces as well as modern neutral backdrops.

To preserve tin-glazed earthenware, clean gently with a soft cloth and lukewarm water containing mild washing-up liquid. Avoid soaking, exposure to extreme temperature changes, or aggressive chemical cleaners, as the soft ceramic body can absorb moisture through unglazed areas.
