Pearlware is a type of earthenware developed in the late 18th century by Josiah Wedgwood and other Staffordshire potters, characterised by a fine white glaze with a faint bluish tinge caused by small amounts of cobalt.

Pearlware was crafted using a refined white-firing clay body, coated in a transparent lead glaze containing a trace of cobalt oxide to neutralise the natural yellowish colour of the fired clay, often decorated with hand-painted or transfer-printed blue designs.

Authenticity is identified by the characteristic bluish pooling of the glaze in crevices and around the base, crazing of the ceramic surface, hand-thrown potting marks, and typical hand-painted or underglaze transfer-printed chinoiserie motifs.

Antique pearlware can be displayed on open shelving, used as a focal point on a mantelpiece, or styled as a small vase for dried botanicals to add historical texture and a subtle splash of blue to contemporary spaces.

Historic ceramics should be hand-washed gently in lukewarm water with mild soap when necessary, avoiding the dishwasher, harsh abrasives, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to protect the fragile glaze and body.
