Late Georgian Oil Painting of Ice Skating

A very interesting and unusual oil painting of ice skating dating to the later Georgian period. The painting is worked on a metal sheet, probably iron or steel. The work is naïve in manner and typical of provincial painting of the period. The scene shows a frozen lake with various figures engaging in ice skating, some more competently than others. This type of work is often Dutch but this piece is titled Winter on the reverse and therefore is probably English. The painting is in good untouched, antique condition, there are some minor scratches to the surface and touching in but nothing that distracts from the work as a whole. The painting retains the original wonderful gilt frame, which has the original gilding and is in great condition. The work is an interesting and decorative early piece. C.1820.
