Pair Of Victorian Oil Paintings Of Dogs

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A fine pair of English school oil on canvas paintings of dogs by T.Benson. The paintings show two separate groupings of dogs, the first is of three King Charles Spaniels in landscape setting and the second is of a pair of fox terriers also in a landscape setting. The pair are beautifully painted in the typical manner of the journeyman animal portraitists of the Victorian period. The paintings are particularly well done in fine detail and with great skill at capturing the animals. The pair are both signed and dated T.Benson 1897 to the lower left. There is little record of T.Benson which is not uncommon for these journeyman artists who travelled the country painting the favourite animals of the wealthy, these works are unusual in that he seems to have more often painted horses than dogs. This group of dogs is likely to have all been from the same household with them both having the same date and landscape backdrops, and therefore are probably the favourite dogs of the lady and gentleman...
