Memento mori translates from Latin as remember that you must die, serving as an artistic or symbolic reminder of the inevitability of death, which gained particular prominence in European art from the medieval period through the Victorian era.

Traditional carvings were crafted from organic materials such as bone, ivory, boxwood, horn, and occasionally stone or precious metals, often mounted on wooden stands or pedestals.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit natural material patination, fine tool marks characteristic of hand carving, microscopic surface shrinkage cracks, and yellowing consistent with age rather than uniform modern resin casting.

These pieces work effectively as focal points on bookshelves, desk tops, or within cabinet of curiosities displays, paired with dark woods, vintage books, and neutral backdrops to highlight their intricate craftsmanship.

Preservation requires stable environmental conditions away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, cleaning only with a dry, soft brush to avoid damaging the fragile organic surface.
