FAQs

Early 20th-century watercolours often focused on capturing atmospheric light, architectural precision, and local historic scenes using transparent washes of pigment on handmade or rag paper.

Traditional components include gum arabic-based watercolours, sepia or iron gall inks, and heavy cotton or linen rag papers manufactured without modern chemical bleaching.

Authenticity is assessed by examining paper degradation, oxidisation of pigments, ink or pencil signatures, framing remnants, and the presence of watermark identifiers characteristic of the period.

Pairing historic artwork with simple, neutral framing allows the piece to function as a focal point while bridging traditional subjects with modern minimalist display methods.

Works on paper require framing with acid-free museum-grade mats, UV-filtering glazing, and placement away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to prevent foxing and fading.
