Oil on canvas laid to board depicting a fisherman in a river landscape by Arthur Spooner 1873-1962. The painting depicts in confident impressionist brushstrokes a fisherman casting out into a river on a sunny day, which I suspect was worked from life, plein air. Spooner is famed for painting views of Nottingham and I feel this is probably Wilford, one of his favourite locations. The painting is in good untouched condition with the quite coarse canvas having been laid to a board, the coarser canvas makes me think this work was probably painted during the war or just after. The work is signed to the lower right: ‘Arthur Spooner’. Arthur Spooner 1873-1962 was born in Nottingham and trained at the School of Art there, he also went on to teach landscape and figurative painting there.
