Landscape Oil Painting with Fisherman by Arthur Spooner

1920 - 1940
Description

Oil on canvas laid to board depicting a fisherman in a river landscape by Arthur Spooner 1873-1962. The painting depicts in confident impressionist brushstrokes a fisherman casting out into a river on a sunny day, which I suspect was worked from life, plein air. Spooner is famed for painting views of Nottingham and I feel this is probably Wilford, one of his favourite locations. The painting is in good untouched condition with the quite coarse canvas having been laid to a board, the coarser canvas makes me think this work was probably painted during the war or just after. The work is signed to the lower right: ‘Arthur Spooner’. Arthur Spooner 1873-1962 was born in Nottingham and trained at the School of Art there, he also went on to teach landscape and figurative painting there. He was one of the great British impressionist painters, he was a member of the Nottingham Society of Artists and The Royal Society of British Artists and exhibited at every major gallery including a remarkable 144 times in Nottingham and 83 times at The Royal Society of British Artists. This example of his work is a later one I think and shows his mastery of landscape and light. The painting is framed in gilt frame of the early twentieth century which has had some old repairs and is overpainted. The whole is a pleasant decorative work with a peaceful feel. C.1940
