Description

A fantastic late 19th century carved oak newel post finial in the form of a man balancing a ball upon his head.

The newel post finial ball sits atop the frowning forehead of a carved figure with his eyes gazing up at it and mouth agape with concentration.

The figure has a small fixing hole evident just above the neckline to the back, otherwise the whole is in a very good condition indeed.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Newel posts and their decorative finials served as structural anchors at the base or landings of staircases, often featuring elaborate carvings in the 19th century to display the craftsmanship and status of a home.

These items were typically hand-carved from dense hardwoods like oak, walnut, or mahogany using chisels and gouges, reflecting the regional joinery traditions of the period.

Authentication relies on examining tool marks, timber shrinkage, natural oxidisation, and wear patterns consistent with age, alongside traditional joinery methods lacking modern adhesives.

Mounting the piece as a standalone sculptural object on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table introduces historical character and tactile warmth to contemporary spaces.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the wood surface.
