Description

A compact late Georgian mahogany chest of drawers constructed in mahogany with the thumb-moulded top over four full-width graduated drawers standing on original finely shaped bracket feet.

A practical, understated chest with a classic Georgian silhouette and a conveniently smaller footprint that suits most interiors. Its honest, utilitarian character would complement a bedroom, hallway or living room where elegant storage is needed without formality.

Presented in very good antique condition with a warm, rich patina and light age related surface wear. Fitted with non-original but period-appropriate swan-neck brass handles. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1800.

The George III period spans from 1760 to 1820, characterised by a transition from heavier baroque influences to more refined classical proportions inspired by Palladian and neoclassical designs.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense tropical hardwoods like Cuban or Honduras mahogany, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers and solid oak or pine secondary woods for drawer linings and carcases.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the hand-cut dovetailing, irregular wood shrinkage in secondary timbers, original or period-correct brass handle hardware, and natural beeswax patination rather than modern chemical finishes.

Pairing a dark timber heritage piece with minimalist modern surroundings, neutral walls, and contemporary abstract art creates a balanced, layered aesthetic that highlights the rich grain of the wood.

Maintain a stable room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and occasionally apply traditional beeswax polish using a soft cloth, avoiding modern silicone-based sprays.
