An Unusual George III Oak Chest of Drawers with the Name "Mary Rees" Inset

18th century
Description

An unusual and large oak chest of graduating drawers with, highly unusually, the inset name of a former owner to the frieze. With inset roulette decoration, and inset banding of ebony and sycamore to the chamfered edges of the chest of drawers.

The brass swan neck handles are all original as are the escutcheons. The top drawer is the only one with the lock, with all the other escutcheons being dummy locks.

Perhaps a marriage piece for a wife in the late 18th century.

The chest of drawers has been restored in the last few years and is in excellent condition in a polish finish. To the right hand side the oak had an historic split which has been restored. With original pine backboards, and what appears too be professional restoration to the left bracket foot. Of good colour, as they say.....

Measuring: 117 cm wide, 114 cm high and 51 cm deep

England, North country, late 18th century
