Description

Antique Swiss silver pocket watch and chain.

The watch has a Swiss 15 jewel stem-winding movement which is working well. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 49mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the two case backs for London (import mark), 1919 with a sponsor’s mark for George Stockwell. From 1 June 1907, Stockwells acted as assay agents, facilitating the import into Britain of foreign gold and silver items which had to be assayed and hallmarked in a UK assay office before being released for retail.

The case is in nice condition with crisp engine turned detail to the back and a vacant cartouche to the centre. The case back has the odd mild bruise, and the inner case back has some light rubbing

The watch glass is in nice condition.

The double sunk dial looks lovely to the naked eye. It has a very faint hairline crack between 1 and 2 but it is incredibly faint, difficult to see even with a jeweller’s loupe. Original blued steel hands.

The watch comes with a later silver double albert, each chain measures 25cm long including the T-bar and the clasp. The clasps are stamped Sterling Silver and there are hallmarks on the T-bar ring but difficult to read. There is also a shorter length of chain which has a silver fob hallmarked for 1925.

The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.

Dealers Notes

ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (because of GPSR legislation, we no longer post items less than 100 years old to Europe, including Northern Ireland).

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Switzerland has a long-established horological tradition, particularly in regions like Geneva and the Jura Mountains, where precision manufacturing and skilled craftsmanship flourished from the 18th century onwards to produce renowned timepieces.

Antique pocket watches typically feature metal cases made from silver, gold, or base metals with gold plating, enclosing intricate brass and steel mechanical movements protected by glass or crystal dials.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmark stamps on the case interior, the complexity and finishing of the mechanical movement, the presence of serial numbers, and the materials used in construction.

An antique pocket watch can be displayed within a glass dome cloche on a mantelpiece or integrated into a desk display using a dedicated watch stand to highlight its mechanical details.

Vintage timepieces require professional mechanical servicing every few years, protection from moisture and extreme temperatures, and careful manual winding to prevent damage to the mainspring.
