Superb Japanese Meiji (early 20thc) Copper Jizai (articulated) Spiny Lobster, Myochin

Rare Japanese Meiji (early 20thC) copper spiny lobster sculpture (okimono), with articulated jizai (hinged) legs, body and antennae. Signed underneath Myochin. Scale model is accurately portrayed with all the anatomical characteristics of a real spiny lobster. Measures ca 38cm wide with antennae (body ca 18cm) x 10cm deep x 7cm high, weight 150g (with wooden box).
 
Excellent condition and patina – no damage or repairs.
 
Articulated Okinomo like this lobster were crafted and used as examples by highly skilled metal artisans to demonstrate their arms and armour making capabilities to prospective Daimyo and Samurai clients. From the 17th century, the production of articulated (jizai) models began in the relatively peaceful Edo era (1600-1868) in Japan. During this period the master metal craftsmen – notably the Myochin family – who made the samurai armour turned to the production of these collectors’ items.
