Landscape Oil Painting by Bertram Priestman

1900 - 1920
Description

A superb landscape oil on canvas painting by the highly regarded artist Bertram Priestman 1868-1951. The scene depicted is almost certainly the Norfolk Broads a popular subject for the artist and depicts a large placid area of water with a stream running into it, and reedbeds to the side. The technique is wonderfully painterly with a confident use of the brush to brilliantly depict time and place. The work is signed to the lower right and dated 1912. Bertram Priestman (1868–1951) was a landscape painter in oil, born in Bradford, Yorkshire, and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art. He travelled extensively in Europe. Priestman exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Goupil Gallery, Royal Institute of Painters in Oils, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and elsewhere in the provinces. His pictures were reproduced by the Medici Society and Frost & Reed. Priestman is noted for his painterly, rather breezy landscapes, (of which this is an excellent example) which inspired the work of his notable pupil Edward Seago. Priestman’s pictures are in many provincial galleries, including Liverpool, Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester, as well as a large number of overseas holdings. Priestman won a series of international medals and was elected a Royal Academy member 1923. This work is in excellent untouched condition and has been in the same family since it was purchased. The painting retains the original gilt frame which is in excellent condition. The whole is a great example of this important artist’s work and is ready to hang.
