The Injured Soldier, 1943, the Toll of War, Ww2 Witness Oil on Board Painting

1920 - 1940
Description

A rare painting, dating from 1943 - squarely in the middle of World War II.

It poignantly offers a humanising, sober look at the experience of an injured soldier, powerfully capturing the emotional and physical toll of war. Seated alone in a barracks room, the soldier's expression is hard to read: there is stoicism yet also utter disbelief. The soldier's bare feet are an important detail. They suggest a state of undress and vulnerability,

This is no made up scene: clearly the artist was right there, part of the story, witnessing and recording. His brushstrokes are loose, visible, and energetic, conveying a sense of raw emotion, with impasto used to create texture and depth.

It is a work by the French artist Emile Richard Raimbault (1911-1997) whose work features in the FAC/National Fonds d'Art Contemporain Collections in Paris. Post war, he exhibited at the Galerie Beauvau-Miromesnil near the Elyséee Palace.

Our oil on hardboard measures 44 x 32 cm and is signed and dated at the lower left. The overall framed size in a patinated wood frame is 50 x 38 cm

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Wartime portraiture from the 1940s often reflects the emotional and physical impact of conflict, utilising subdued palettes and expressionistic brushwork to capture realism and psychological depth.

Due to wartime material constraints, artists frequently used rigid supports such as wood panel or masonite board instead of canvas, applying oil pigments directly onto prepared gesso grounds.

Authentic works from this period typically display subtle oxidation along the board edges, era-appropriate framing construction, dated artist signatures, and characteristic pigment settling.

Figurative artwork from this era complements structured interiors such as a library or study, hanging effectively against dark painted walls, wood panelling, or neutral plaster.

Keep the artwork in a climate-controlled room away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting the surface gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush.
