This exceptional military chest dates from around 1840 and offers both striking aesthetic appeal and practical storage. Constructed from solid padauk wood, a richly coloured and highly durable hardwood native to the Indian subcontinent.
The piece is designed in two sections for ease of transport, a typical feature of military chests intended for use by officers who moved frequently between postings.
Its top surface is finished with a beautifully carved gadrooned edge, adding a refined decorative element that continues around the base. The front is arranged with two short drawers over three long ones, providing generous and practical storage. Each drawer is finely constructed with traditional hand-cut dovetail joints, cockbeaded fronts, and carved recessed handles.
The chest stands on well-proportioned, reeded feet.
Over the years, the padauk wood has developed a deep, lustrous patina. The overall craftsmanship is of a very high standard, combining robust constru
...ction with elegant design details.
In very good condition, ready for use.
