Fabulous oak high backed settle, profusely carved with figures, masks, female busts and mythical winged creatures, the hinged seat opening to storage compartment below.

With normal minor marks / scuffs etc commensurate with age and use, overall this wonderfully decorative settle is in good sound condition and is a decorative yet very functional piece of furniture.

This carved oak high back settle comes from the 1900 period in the Renaissance Revival style. It has a dark brown timber finish and stands 142 cm high, 113 cm wide, and 41 cm deep. The piece has a high panelled back with three relief-carved panels containing Romayne head medallions, mythical winged creatures, and scrolling foliage. The top rail displays carved scrollwork beneath a projecting cornice supported by carved caryatid figures and human mask capitals on the uprights. The scroll-carved scroll arms curve outwards above a hinged seat that opens to reveal an internal storage compartment. The base features three relief-carved panels depicting similar mythical creatures and floral motifs between fluted corner stiles. Normal minor marks and scuffs from age and use are present across the dark brown surfaces. In a modern home, this practical and decorative item provides seating combined with hidden storage.
