The quality and weight of the drawer linings lead us to believe the Georgian oak dresser was constructed from what is known as “bog oak”. It was reclaimed from fallen oak trees in peat bogs, preserved for thousands of years. It also produces a stunning deep rich dark brown colour, due to the minerals the timber absorbed from the peat and soil. Interestingly, bog oak was commonly used to inlay fine decorative pieces, as an alternative to ebony. The oak rack is designed with a straight protruding cornice, featuring an elegant shaped apron below. The oak rack is constructed with serpentine shaped vertical ends, incorporating wide oak boards (the wider the boards, generally the better the quality) and two grooved horizontal shelves, which were designed to display plates and crockery. The enclosed Welsh dresser base, boasts a wonderful two-plank solid oak top (displaying wonderful colour and patination), with three frieze moulded drawers, flanked by two stunning arched fielded panel doors below and a central fixed fielded panel. The sides incorporated inset panels with horizontal stiles. The doors incorporate period brass butterfly hinges, which are in good working condition. The base has been constructed in the traditional manner, incorporating mortice and tenon joints, secured by oak pegs. Insider the dresser base is a fixed shelf. The Georgian dresser stands on its block oak stiles (feet). The drawers are fitted with later top-quality Georgian period brass swan-neck handles and escutcheons (it was common for handles / knobs to be replaced through the life of a dresser). However, the brass door knobs appear to be original. The oak drawer linings and drawer bottoms appear to have been restored at some point in the past. Given Welsh dressers were working utility pieces of furniture, it is not surprising that they would have encountered wear and tear through the centuries. The drawers are constructed with hand-dovetailed joints; they are smooth running and close flush to the frame.

Condition Report:
Nominal old use marks and age-related shrinkage to the dresser top and leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The drawers are fitted with later top-quality Georgian period brass swan-neck handles and escutcheons (it was common for handles / knobs to be replaced through the life of a dresser).
