Brass Bound Walnut Campaign Chest of Drawers C.1860

19th century
Description

Very good example of the classic 19th.c. campaign chest of drawers c.1860. Designed to travel with an officer on long military campaigns, it is constructed in two sections which fit together to make a chest of two short and three long drawers. The top, drawer fronts and sides are in solid walnut (an unusual choice of timber for campaign furniture) strengthened with brass bindings and corners to protect it from the rigours of travel. Note how the handles are designed to fold flush with the drawer fronts to prevent them from being broken in transit. Likewise the turned feet are removable (or adjustable) with threaded metal fittings. Two old patched repairs to the top where knots in the timber have been removed - these are probably original to the construction of the piece. Plus a repaired split toward the rear right hand corner, which has been reinforced from the underside. Otherwise excellent original colour and condition. Cleaned and waxed in our workshops. Keys supplied.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
