Eighteenth-century architectural engravings are fine art prints created by carving designs into copper or steel plates, often depicting notable buildings, cityscapes, or architectural studies with fine lines and detailed hatching.

These pieces were typically printed using hand-operated presses on laid or woven rag paper, utilising black or sepia inks, and frequently framed in simple wooden mouldings suited to the period.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the paper for watermarks and chain lines, inspecting the impression for plate marks left by the metal edge under pressure, and analysing the ageing characteristics of the paper and ink.

An antique engraving adds historical depth and character to modern spaces when hung against neutral walls, paired with minimalist frames or traditional timber surrounds to create a balanced focal point.

Preservation requires framing with acid-free mats and UV-protective glass, while keeping the piece away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent fading and foxing.
