Eighteenth-century country dressers were practical pieces designed for working households, typically featuring an open plate rack top combined with a base comprising drawers and cupboards or open potboards for storing and displaying domestic kitchenware.

These items were predominantly constructed from regional hardwoods like elm, oak, and pine, joined using traditional pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-cut dovetails for drawers, and backboards made from wider, hand-sawn timber planks.

Authenticity is indicated by the presence of hand-planed surfaces, irregular tool marks, period-appropriate brass or iron hardware, natural timber shrinkage and oxidisation, and construction methods consistent with pre-industrial joinery.

An antique dresser can be grounded in contemporary spaces by using the open shelving to display curated ceramics or glassware, contrasting the warm, aged wood tones against neutral, minimalist walls for a balanced aesthetic.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the aged wood surface.
