FAQs

The 19th-century French school encompasses diverse movements from academic realism and romanticism to early impressionism, characterised by rigorous draughtsmanship and expressive brushwork.

Period works typically feature oil pigments applied to stretched woven linen or canvas, often secured with hand-forged tacks to wooden stretcher frames and housed in gilded or gessoed timber frames.

Authentication involves examining the canvas weave, inspecting pigment oxidisation and craquelure under magnification, checking the stretcher frame construction, and identifying period signatures or artist stamps.

Pairing a historic canvas with minimalist modern furniture creates a striking contrast that highlights the artworks depth, texture, and tonal qualities.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and employing professional cleaning methods to protect the varnish and paint layer.
