19th Century Portrait of an Army Officer Circle of Thomas Phillips

19th century
Description

A fine 19th century Portrait painting of An army Officer in the circle of Thomas Phillips . Oil on canvas, housed in a gilt frame

The size being 73.5 x 60cm (28¾ x 23½ in.) whilst overall size is 81 x 95 cm high

There is a label to the reverse which as far as i can make out names the officer as "colonel Barclay" and suggesting this work has been attributed to Thomas Philips

by "NPG"( National portrait gallery)

The overall condition is good there is some age related craquelure throughout as to be expected and there has been restoration in the past which shows under u.v light. The canvas slightly undulates showing in certain lights, however this does not detract from a very well executed portrait. The frame has some minor losses which have been gilded over

Thomas Phillips (BRITISH 1770-1845) RA was a leading English portrait and subject painter. He painted many of the notable men of the day including scientists, artists, writers, poets and explorers.

His works can be seen in national trust houses and other galleries/museums
