Victorian English School Oil Painting

A charming oil on canvas depicting a traveller longingly looking in a restaurant window. The work is beautifully observed with a great deal of humour coupled with technical skill. The painting shows a traveller with his belongings bundled and tied to a stick under his arm. He has stopped to look in a restaurant window and stares longingly at the roast pig’s head, and rack of beef, probably lacking the funds to buy anything. The restaurant owner can be seen peeking over the window dressing, hoping the man won’t come in. The whole work is very competently done for this type of Victorian humourist painting, there is some great detail, particularly in the signage of the restaurant. The work is in good condition; there has been an old repair to the canvas around the string of sausages hanging in the window. The painting is not signed or dated, which is not unusual for this type of work, but the Rowney canvas used would date it to the 1860’s. The painting is framed in a period maple frame but it is not the original, it does work extremely well with the tone of the work. The whole has a great period look, and is full of charm and humour.
