A charming oil on canvas depicting a traveller longingly looking in a restaurant window. The work is beautifully observed with a great deal of humour coupled with technical skill. The painting shows a traveller with his belongings bundled and tied to a stick under his arm. He has stopped to look in a restaurant window and stares longingly at the roast pig’s head, and rack of beef, probably lacking the funds to buy anything. The restaurant owner can be seen peeking over the window dressing, hoping the man won’t come in. The whole work is very competently done for this type of Victorian humourist painting, there is some great detail, particularly in the signage of the restaurant. The work is in good condition; there has been an old repair to the canvas around the string of sausages hanging in the window.
