FAQs

Nineteenth-century English watercolour paintings are characterised by their atmospheric depiction of light, weather, and topography, often capturing pastoral scenes and picturesque landscapes with delicate washes and fine detail.

Artists traditionally used high-rag-content handmade paper, organic watercolour pigments derived from minerals and plants, and natural animal hair brushes, often mounted on board or framed under protective glass.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate paper ageing, subtle foxing, genuine artist signatures or studio stamps, and historical framing techniques such as early backings and handmade mounts.

An antique landscape watercolour pairs well with both traditional and contemporary interiors, often hung in simple wooden or gilded frames to create a focal point on neutral walls or within a curated gallery wall.

To preserve antique watercolours, frame them using acid-free archival materials, display them away from direct sunlight and high humidity, and protect them behind UV-filtering glass to prevent fading and paper degradation.
