This folk art sculpture from circa 1940 is carved from wood with a warm brown finish and signed by the Ukrainian sculptor Wasyl Orysik, working in Germany. The piece depicts a bespectacled scholar wearing a long coat and carrying a bag, reading an open book beneath an illuminated glass and metal lantern mounted on a post. The figure stands atop a pedestal styled as a miniature bookcase containing carved volumes and a small jug, all resting on carved books with visible shoe details. The construction incorporates metal and glass elements alongside detailed wood carving and a signed signature block. Measuring 123 cm high by 23 cm wide and 26 cm deep, the sculpture is suited for display in a gentleman's library, study or an empty corner of a home interior. It functions as both a decorative carved figure and an integrated streetlamp floor light, adding character to a room as a freestanding conversation piece.

Figurative wood carving has a long heritage across Europe, often originating in regional folk art traditions where craftsmen sculpted timber into characterful figures depicting everyday life, trades, or literary themes.

These sculptures are typically hand-carved from solid hardwoods such as lime, walnut, or oak using chisels and gouges, often integrating secondary elements such as working lanterns with wiring or fitted glass panels.

Authentic period carvings display clear chisel marks, hand-fitted joinery, natural grain variations, and genuine patination from age and handling, particularly around high-touch areas like bases and hands.

Position the piece in a home library, study, or reading nook to add textural contrast and narrative charm alongside contemporary soft furnishings and dark timber accents.

Dust the carving regularly with a soft dry brush, keep it away from direct heat sources to prevent timber cracking, and occasionally apply a clear beeswax polish to protect the finish.
