Summer Pastoral Oil Painting by Eric Belton

A fine oil on canvas scene titled ‘Summer Pastoral’ by Eric Belton. The scene is beautifully composed with a landscape of sheep grazing and a village in the distance. In the foreground a shepherd is resting, having a picnic lunch with his wife, as his dog looks directly out of the painting. The technique is very interesting as the work is constructed in really thick impasto paint giving the piece a huge amount of depth and texture. The painting is signed by monogram and on the reverse is attributed: ‘Fine original oil painting by Eric Belton’. I have found no record of Eric Belton and due to the evident quality of the work and ability of the artist I can only assume this is because he was a commercial artist who did not exhibit, the style of the work makes me think he was probably an advertising artist. The painting is in excellent untouched condition and retains the original frame. A fine and beautiful work that is ready to hang. C.1940.
