Victorian Marquetry Specimen Apprentice Chest of Drawers

19th century
Description

A superb miniature apprentice-made mahogany chest of drawers, dating from the mid 19th Century. It is a charming piece with four long drawers, each with their original turned wooden knobs. The sides and top of the chest are decorated with intricate geometric marquetry work and it stands on four small turned bun feet. The chest is full of details and is a real expression of the skill of the apprentice - the drawer fronts have decorative triangular patterns created by using different cuts of wood, the drawers are flanked by small columns with turned ball detail and there is a triangular geometric inlaid border below the drawers. It is very well made and each drawer is beautifully made with hand-cut dovetail joints.

It is in good original condition and is a rare and unusual piece. The wood has a wonderful rich patina and the piece is sturdy and the joints are strong. The drawers are generally clean and tidy and all open smoothly. There are some general signs of age and use and minor marks and light knocks but nothing detrimental. There is some slight shrinkage and lifting between some of the inlaid panels on the top but overall it displays very well.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
