A banjo barometer is a type of mercury weather glass characterised by its distinctive shape, featuring a circular dial at the base and a long stem housing a thermometer, which became popular during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

These instruments typically feature solid mahogany or mahogany veneer bodies, often accented with boxwood stringing, brass bezels, convex mirror plates, and hand-engraved silvered brass dials.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-blown glass tubes, hand-engraved brass dials signed by the maker, traditional cabinetmaking joinery, and patination consistent with age.

This piece works exceptionally well when mounted on a panelled wall or in a hallway, adding historic character and vertical linear interest to contemporary or traditional schemes.

Keep the instrument away from direct sunlight, radiators, and vibrations. If relocating the barometer, the mercury cistern must be locked or tilted correctly to prevent air bubbles entering the glass tube.
