FAQs

A semainier is a tall, narrow chest of drawers traditionally featuring seven drawers, one for each day of the week. Originating in 18th-century France, it was designed as a compact and organised storage solution for personal garments and linens.

These cabinets are typically constructed using a solid timber frame layered with decorative wood veneers, such as burr ash, walnut, or mahogany. Traditional joinery methods like dovetailing are utilised for the drawer construction to ensure structural longevity.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the timber grain, drawer construction details such as hand-cut dovetails, original hardware, and signs of natural ageing and patina within the secondary woods used for the carcase and drawer linings.

Due to its vertical proportions, a semainier offers high-capacity storage with a minimal floor footprint, making it functional for bedrooms or hallways where space is limited, while introducing natural wood texture and visual warmth.

To preserve the wood veneer, keep the piece away from direct sunlight and fluctuating heat sources to prevent cracking or fading. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally treat the surface with appropriate furniture wax.
