English Imari porcelain inspired by Japanese exports emerged in the late 18th century, with Staffordshire potteries producing distinctive iron red, cobalt blue, and gilt patterns throughout the Georgian and Victorian eras.

These items were typically crafted from soft paste or bone china, featuring hand-applied underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red enamel paints, and intricate hand-painted gilding fired in kilns.

Authentication involves examining potting imperfections, wear to the gilding, body translucency under strong light, and identifying manufacturer pattern numbers or factory marks painted on the base.

Antique ceramics add historic character when displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, on open shelving units, or utilised as curated tablescapes paired with neutral linens.

Antique porcelain should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent, avoiding dishwashers, harsh chemicals, and scrubbing to protect delicate hand-painted enamels and gold gilding.
