Bronze Sculpture of the Pied Piper, Circa 1920

1900 - 1920
Description

This rare bronze figure is solid cast and remarkably heavy. It was most likely made at the famous Bromsgrove Guild of Craftsmen and was bought from this area. It shows a view of the medieval pied piper of Hamelin dressed in a tunic and leggings with a soft hat playing his pipe with a group of rats running at his feet. This interesting bronze is indistinctly signed on the reverse of the base. I have over the years locally bought several similar styled pieces with province to the Bromsgrove Guild and the sculpting, casting style, patination and slightly naïve detailing are typical of the pieces I have previously sold. I feel this is its likely origin.

The Bromsgrove Guild was a group of local skilled craftsmen working in various mediums from collective workshops in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire in the early 20th century. Their most famous work was producing the gates for Buckingham Palace.

English, circa 1920

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 1920s, small-scale bronze sculptures were produced in large numbers as decorative arts for home interiors. Sculptors frequently drew inspiration from folklore, classical mythology, and contemporary literary figures to create expressive, character-driven pieces.

Sculptures from this era were typically created using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting technique. Molten bronze was poured into detailed moulds, cooled, hand-chased to refine surface details, and treated with chemicals to create a durable, coloured patina.

Authentic period bronzes exhibit crisp casting detail, appropriate hand-tooling marks, and natural age wear to the patina around raised surfaces. They should feel heavy for their size and typically display signs of oxidation or subtle wear underneath the base.

Small bronze figures work well when layered onto bookshelves, console tables, or mantlepieces alongside leather-bound books, framed art, or ceramic objects. The rich bronze tones provide grounding texture and visual interest in minimalist or traditional settings.

Bronze sculptures should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry cloth or gentle horsehair brush. To protect the original patina, avoid abrasive chemical cleaners and apply a thin layer of clear microcrystalline wax annually, buffing gently to maintain a soft lustre.
